Reconstructing Pompeian Households
نویسنده
چکیده
A database of objects discovered in houses in the Roman city of Pompeii provides a unique view of ordinary life in an ancient city. Experts have used this collection to study the structure of Roman households, exploring the distribution and variability of tasks in architectural spaces, but such approaches are necessarily affected by modern cultural assumptions. In this study we present a data-driven approach to household archeology, treating it as an unsupervised labeling problem. This approach scales to large data sets and provides a more objective complement to human

متن کاملPompeii in the Crystal Palace: Comparing Victorian and Modern Virtual, Immersive Environments
This JISC funded project involves building a virtual 3D model in Second Life, a multiuser online world, of the Pompeian Court, a life-size model of a Pompeian house built in the Crystal Palace in 1854. We wish to examine how the social and educational experiences and reconstructive possibilities offered by the virtual environment compare with those of the original Court. By examining these them...

متن کاملBlackening of Pompeian cinnabar paintings: X-ray microspectroscopy analysis.
Red Pompeian paintings, very famous for their deep intensity, are currently suffering from darkening. The origins of this darkening degradation are not clearly identified yet and remain a major issue for curators. In the specific case of cinnabar (HgS)-based red pigment, a photoinduced conversion into black metacinnabar is usually suspected. This work is focused on the blackening of red cinnaba...

Red beds, conglomerates and salt were considered azoic and problematic rocks, but Paleopalynology and Inorganic Geochemistry proved to be useful for placing them in time and space. In the early last century, in Mexican NE region, only three Mesozoic red bed units were differentiated, dated as Late Triassic to Late Jurassic. It was important tratigraphically to place them properly as they were c...
